Helping with homework

Now that your child has gone back to school after the end of the summer holidays, the homework begins again. As a parent, it can be beneficial to both you and your child to help with the work that they take home from school. Not only will you be showing an interest in what your child is learning, but you will also be able to understand your child’s strengths and help them to overcome any difficulties that they may have.

homeworkWhen your child needs help with their homework, you need to make sure that you do not end up doing it for them. Help them with any questions that they may have, and work through any problems together. You will want to nominate an area of your home as the homework area, making sure that all necessary tools (pens, paper etc…) are at hand. You will want to ensure that there are no distractions, so turn the television and radio off before you get started. If your child is hungry however, do take a break and give them something to eat.

Pay attention to the homework and follow any guidelines that the teacher may have included. If your child has a question, try to refrain from giving them the answer, but help them come to it on their own. If they are doing research, help them to rewrite passages into their own words and make sure that they are not copying whole sections. Schools are happy for you as a parent to help your child with their homework as long as you are not helping them too much. They still need to understand everything as they will more than likely have exams on it later. Be encouraging to your child, and spend time helping them to understand.
