Are you thinking about getting a dog, but are not sure whether it would be a good idea? Your child may want a dog badly, and you may think it sounds idyllic. Whether you have a dog, or are considering getting one, there are certain things that you can do to make your child aware ofВ his safety around a pet. You may have heard stories on the news about a child getting bitten by a dog, but if you educate your child on how to behave around an animal, it can make them understand safe behaviour and decrease any risk of getting hurt.
One of the things that you often see is a child pulling a dog around by its tail or trying to sit on it. Show your child how to stroke a dog, and teach them not to hug the dog in a strangle hold. Your dog may not be aggressive by nature, but if it feels threatened it may reciprocate the feeling. Teach your child not to look straight into the dog’s eyes as this can also make it feel intimidated. Leave it alone while it is trying to eat or sleep, and treat your pet with kindness and love. The feelings will be returned and owning a dog can be a great experience for your child.
