Finding out that you are going to become a father is a wonderful feeling, but can also be slightly worrying. Asking yourself whether you are mentally ready to be a father and whether you will be able to afford it are normal questions, that most expecting fathers all ask themselves. It is normal to feel anxious, and you may want to talk to your own father or friends that are fathers themselves.
To prepare for your partner’s pregnancy, you may want to attend antenatal classes with her. This is a great way to learn what to expect from when your partner gives birth and how to recognise any signs of labour. Although you will be given an expected date of birth, these are generally only a guideline and your child may be born weeks before or after the expected time.
When your partner starts to approach her date, you will want to be able to recognise any signs of labour. Things to look out for would be if she is suffering from lower back pain, or whether her contractions are more frequent. Do not panic when her waters break, but instead remain clam and phone up the hospital for advice. They may ask you to come in or they may ask you to wait a while longer. Listen to what they have to say and follow their advice accordingly.
